Details

Probably the most popular and easiest to use 8 bit shift register. It's often used to control a lot of LED's or for lots of switches from a micro controller. The 74HC595 has lots of examples and is widely used with Arduino's. With a single 74HC595, you can control 8 LED's with just three lines on the Arduino. But the best part is that you control a number of 74HC595's from the same three lines. So you can get 16, 24, 32, or more! LED's all controlled from a single Arduino.

Here is a pinout of the 74HC595.

Here is a Fritzing wiring example with an Arduino Uno

The Arduino website has some example code to get all eight LED's to light up correctly as well as further adding in more 74HC595's to control even more LED's. Click here

I used 2 of these to drive my 16x5 led matrix clock. Work great, leds are bright and have been working for over a month now without any issues. I also have to mention their toughness on soldering temperature, didnt use DIP sockets, soldered very close to the body of the chip and worked without any problems. Great value and great price too!

I used 8 of these for an 8x8x8 LED cube and they worked great. The only drawback is that if you want to be able to turn on all of the outputs at once, the current needs to be limited to 6ma per pin. But on the plus side, I made a few mistakes while wiring them up the first time and shorted pins together briefly on more than one occasion with no permanent damage done. This is a pretty tough little IC!

These Shift Registers are great. I'm using them for the ShiftPWM library and these light RGB leds nice and bright. I've tried the Fairchild version and leds are not as bright. These are GOOD!
