Inexpensive way to build a nice desk mic for HF amateur radio ransceiverI started experimenting with this mic at the workbench and after building a simple microphone preamp thought that it would be worth hooking it up to my Kenwood TS-430S amateur radio transceiver. After fiddling around with the audio input levels on the Kenwood, I'm getting reports that "it's a keeper". It turned out to be a nice desk mic, for about $0.35 in parts!
For the preamp (used for the transceiver input), I used a schematic on the web using one 2N3904 transistor and a few resistors and capacitors. Then I hooked up the mic using shielded cable and finally adding a 4.7K resistor and 10K resistor to prevent RF feedback squeal. This fix is on the web as well. The mic preamp is powered with two AA cells and the signal input is further attenuated with a 10K resistor. You will probably need to do something differently depending on your transceiver.
Very cost-effective for amateur radio applications!Posted on
